The PLASTIKI

The Plastiki

The picture that is shown above is the AWESOME PLASTIKI! the boat is made out of recycled plastic bottles but not all of the parts of the boat is made out of plastic bottles only the bottom part. Their goal is to sail the Plastiki from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia an 11 thousand mile journey don't you think it's cool?
David de Rothschild came up with the idea of the Plastiki and it took him 3 years to build this amazing boat Plastiki. It took him 3 years to build it because first he has to sketch the model of the Plastiki then he built it. He said that we should start using waste as resource. The Plastiki is actually made out of 12,500 plastic bottles that is a lot! In the Plastiki there is a quite big cabin in there and also they put a small vegetable garden which is cool.
David de Rothschild built the Plastiki because he wanted to make it out of waste like he said using waste as resource.

The 10 Facts About The History Of Haiti

1. Long ago on the 6th of December 1492 Columbus discovered Haiti. In 1697 the French ruled Haiti. Haiti became one of the biggest sugar producing country. The Haitians worked as slaves at the sugar cane plantations.

2. I think that why is Haiti like this today because it is a very poor country it used to be rich but because some of the rich people took their money and that is why they become poor.

3. Haiti became poorer now because of the earthquake that happened. The earthquake was really big and it destroyed their homes.

4. Long ago besides sugar cane Haitians also produced cotton and rum which they supplied to French people.

5. There was a revolution and a leader by the name Dessalines who ruled Haiti from 1801. Mr. Dessalines did not rule the country well. He was a dictator people became very poor since then agricultural land destroyed and people became poorer and uneducated.

6. Did you know that before Haiti became the French colony it was a Spanish colony and the French defeated Spanish. Right now the population of Haiti is around 9,000,000 people. Haitians are mostly Christians.

7. Dessalines declared Independence in 1804 of Saint Domingue under the native name Haiti.

8. Dessalines killed a lot of French people who remained in that Island and made himself as an emperor as Jaques I.

9. Hatians became disstaisfied with Dessalines's rule and there was a revolt against him. He beacame tired and sick and could not rule the country anymore.

10. Dessalines died in the year of 1806. After his death Henri Christophe became king and calls himself King Henry I.

Aid Coming to Haiti (Part 2)

Many countries around the world are giving aids to Haiti on Sunday. A lot of people are found alive in the Haiti earthquake but they have to be sent to the hospital to be taken care of. Some doctors from around the world came to Haiti to help the Haiti people for surgery and other medications. The doctors worked very hard because a lot of people are injured badly and more than 100 people were operated. The doctors worked very fast otherwise the wounded people might die if they get infected because of the bacterias and germs.

WHY IS FRESH WATER SCARCE?

1. List the main reasons for water scarcity
Variations in climate, land degradation, population, growth and water pollution.

2. What is a drought? What type of hardships do you think that a drought could cause if you were living in a village in a poor country such as Ethiopia?
A drought is like no rain and it's dryness. They can't grow any plants because of dryness.

3. How does land degredation affect the supply of fresh water?
The soil is like a sponge keeping the rain.

4.
(a) What is El Nino?
El Nino is like a drought but it comes every 3 to 5 years in the Pacific Ocean of the cost of Peru. Then you get dryness. Then it won't observe the rain and it becomes flooding and it also causes drought.

(b) Why does El Nino often cause drought in Australia?
Because it goes the reverse way as a result there are no moist.

5. Observe the map showing the global effects of El Nino in 1982-83.

(a) What effects does El Nino have on the availability on fresh water?
It takes away the moisture and availability of water is greatly decreased.

(b) Name the countries and describe the problems that arose from decreased rainfall caused by El Nino.
Africa- Reduced corn crop in sub-Saharan region
China- Agricultural land under threat from drought in northern regions and flooding in southern regions.
Indonesia- High air pollution levels, following forest flies.
Philippines- Lower rice harvest following drought.
Papua New Guinea- Drought -related failure of food crops, leading to famine conditions requiring food aid.
Australia- Wheat exports threatened by drought conditions across grain-growing areas, particularly New South Whales.
Unite States- Rainfall above normal in north-western states (double the historical avaerages)
Colombia- Fishing operations affected by lower catch (down 20%)
Peru- Flooding (also in Chile) Fishing operators affected by lower catch as anchovy and Pacific sardine move offshore to escape warm currents (5 degrees C above normal temperatures)

Bintaro Lama Field Trip

Hi I went on a field to Bintaro Lama. We went in groups I was with Michelle Layanto and Sara Kausar. We went to stages 1,3 and 5.

In stage 1 we learnt about Filtration and how they clean their water. They have this big blue bucket and inside it there are small rocks. When the water is clean they don't use it to drink or to cook with it's actually used to take a bath.

In stage 3 we learnt how to clean the water bottle. This is the steps to clean it first
you wash the inside of the water bottle with soap next the outside with soap and then then the mouth part with soap. Next you wash it with water and rinse the inside and wash the mouth part again then fill the water bottle with water. Then you put it in the sun for about six hours and if the day is not sunny or it's going to rain then put it out for two
days. Then we get to try doing it.

In stage 5 we learnt about turbidity. I learnt that if you put the water in the turbidity meter you can see from the side that the water is totally clean but if you look in the turbidity meter if you can see the black X in the bottom that means that the water is clean but if you can't that means the water is dirty. Then we test it with a machine you put it in the water and if it says a number that is below a seven it is not safe to drink well
seven is safe to drink. In the PH scale 0 is Most acidic 7 is like safe to drink and 14 is Most basic.

This is what we learnt during that field trip it was fun you get to learn a lot of new things and from the Water Treatment I learnt new stuff too but going to Bintaro Lama is more interesting to me.

Water Activity

1. What percentage of the world's supply of water is fresh water?
2.5 percent.

2. Where is the world's supply of fresh water found?
On earth.

3. Even though the supply of fresh water is abundant it is still a problem. Why?
Because water and people are not equal.

4. Observe the map of world average annual precipitation (opposite).
(a) Describe the changes in rainfall that occur as you move from the southern to the northern tip of Africa.
In the southern tip of Africa there is a little bit then in the middle also known as the equator there is a lot and if you go a little bit to the northern the water will get less.

(b) Describe the changes in rainfall that occur as you move from the western to the eastern tip of Australia along the Tropic of Capricorn.
Well if you go to the west there is a little bit of rainfall.

5. Observe the map above of water availability per person.
(a) Which parts of the world appear to have a large amount of water available per person?
The north part of the world.

(b) Which parts of the world appear to have a small amount of water per person?
The east part of the world.

6. Observe the diagram of water use.
(a) What are the main uses of water?
For human living and the animals, plants and every living thing on earth needs water and has water.

(b) Which uses have increased the most over the last century?
The twentieth century.

Hi I went to a field trip to the Water Treatment in Jakarta last week on Thursday the 5th.It was fun and this is what we saw and learned.

In Stage 1 we saw a very big machine which used to separate the big trash from the dirty water. The trash is like black plastic bags, plastic water bottle, branches and etc.

In Stage 2 after they separate the garbage and dirty water, they add
minerals and they oxygenate the water. Before they put the minerals the water color is brown after that it became a little cleaner.

In Stage 3 they put Alum to make a floc for the small bits of dirt and it combines together like a magnet.

In Stage 4 the filtration of water treatment. They put 1 meter of sand into the dirty water in the pond. And
the sand settles down and it becomes a sediment.

In Stage 5 after they do the filtration
they also do the disinfection which the water has no bacteria and clean and it's gong to be brought to the lab and tested it.

This is the process of how dirty water becomes clean water. And the water that we use everyday. It is a lot of fun learning about it and you can see the process of it. It's amazing!

Water

EVAPORATION

This is a picture of the water cycle but it also explains what Evaporation means. Evaporation means that liquid into gas.

CONDENSATION

The picture on the left is a picture of Condensation. Condensation is the opposite of Evaporation where gas turns into water.

PRECIPITATION
The picture on the right is a sample of Precipitation. It's a process of water descending to
the ground through the air and it came in a several forms as described beside.

INFILTRATION

The picture shows what Infiltration means. It happens when water seeps into the soil.

Indonesian Eartquake 2009

This picture shown on the right is the Indonesian earthquake. This happened on the 2nd of September 2009. Indonesia got the earthquake because it is in the Ring of Fire and the Ring of Fire goes around Australia, Indonesia, Japan and California.

There are not going to be any Landslides in Indonesia because Indonesia is a flat counrty and there would be land slides in there would be alot of mountains there.

I was in the earthquake. I was in school I went down the stairs and I felt really dizzy and I went downstairs and everybody was running out to the field and my mom told me that it was an earthquake and I got suprised. When I went in the car I saw a school and everybody was outside. But animals know what was going to happen like there was this snake at school and it went into a hole and I think that snake knows what was going to happen to that day.The Earthquake was 7,3 scala richter and that was a really big earthquake, 45 people died in Tasikmalaya and Cianjur, west Java and in Jakarta 6 people went to the hospital and got hospitalized.

And when there was an earthquake alot of buildings got damadged. And mostly people died in a earthquake because of buildings falling on them and they die from it. and when the earthquake was happening some buildings were wiggling and they get damaged and some stuff fall on people and they die from that. And from the tall buildings that humans made and when there was an earthqake they fall and kill some people. So ust be carefull.

Typhoon Morakot

This picture is the typhoon Morakot and the houses are ruined because of that typhoon. And I think it happened because it started from the mountains and it rained so much and the land soaked the water and it became slippery and the land started to slide down. It killed a lot of people and it also ruined their houses like the picture shown here. It also knocked down some buildings and some of them also floated. Because Taiwan is really close to the equator like Japan. Japan got the Morakot because it's close to the equator like these places might get the Morakot Korea, Philippine, Taiwan and Japan. So to protect our country each individual should take a good care of our enviroment by growing some trees.
